WHO to declare Nigeria polio-free country in October

The World Health Organization (WHO) is concluding paper works prelude to the declaration of Nigeria polio-free nation.

The District 9110 Governor (DG) of Rotary International, Dr. Jide Akerele, disclosed this in Lagos at a breakfast meeting hosted by the president of Rotary Club of Falomo, Mrs. Julie Nkanga.

He said WHO would make the pronouncement if no polio case is reported in Nigeria before August 22, 2019.

“We have not had a case of polio for the last three years. The last case was August 22, 2016. On August 22, 2019, if we don’t record any case of polio by then WHO would declare Nigeria polio-free. We are expecting the much-awaited declaration and certificate in October,” he said.

Akerele said he was impressed by the club’s performance, urged members to up their ante in humanitarian activities.

Supervisor of health in the local government area, Mr. Oshodi Wakilu, who was on the entourage appreciated Rotary for its community-oriented programmes.

“This is a big surprise to us and we are really thankful to Rotary for this gesture aimed at assisting government in reducing the sufferings of the people.”The club in the past had embarked on a massive reading campaign aimed at promoting the efficiency of students in the use of English language.

In her remarks, Nkanga said the club is determined to ensure rural dweller get quality healthcare.

“We are glad to host the district governor. He is here to commission some of our projects like donation of generating set and hospital equipment to the Langbasa community health centre. When we went there for needs assessment some weeks ago, we discovered that patients go through a lot when there is power outage. We are happy to impact lives,” she said.
