The managing director of the of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku yesterday commissioned a 120-strong team of arm bearing aviation security (AVSEC) as part of the agency’s mission to beef up security at airports in the country.
Speaking during the commissioning of the personnel at a ceremony held at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Kuku explained that the special force is meant to deter people and “help us in terms of executing all of our desires, specifically around making sure that there are no illegal activities that go on.”
She added: “We hope that we do not have to use force. In the event that they need to, they will coordinate with all of the other security agencies.”
She described the commissioning of the special force as a “significant milestone” and a “remarkable moment for the agency as it takes constructive steps to get Nigeria aviation security team kitted in line with the global standards.”
“This is for them to help us in terms of securing our assets, in terms of helping to secure lives, as well as the people within the aviation environment specifically at the airports.
“So, it is remarkable for us, we’re happy that we spent a significant amount of time in terms of training them, in terms of identifying the sorts of individuals that are part of this squad.
“They’re quite professional and they will continue to engage as well as work closely with other security agencies,” she said.
The managing director allayed the fears of the security team deploying excessive force in the course of their duty.
However, she cautioned passengers and other airport users to go about their businesses in an orderly manner.
“The arms they carry today shows that they are now an elite squad that will complement the aviation security staff that we have.”
Speaking on the facilities where the personnel will be deployed, Kuku said FAAN they will start with Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu international airports.
“The special squad’s role will be to critically work with all of the other security agencies. This is very important. You can see them, they’re gallant, they’re kitted, they’re ready to protect, and they’re ready to serve.”
“We’re also collaborating very closely with all of the security agencies across the airports,” she added.
