The representative of Borno south in the senate, Mr. Ali Ndume, has said that the position of a senate president is for those with the deepest pockets.
Ndume who spoke in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service said with his experience as a lawmaker, he would be the next senate president but unfortunately, he said he does not have the money to lobby for the position.
“If I’m rich and can share money as was being done presently to get positions in the senate, with my experience, I tell you I would’ve become the president of the Senate. There is nothing like considering competence, everything was monetised. Even those who knew nothing about the legislative procedures, simply because they have money, they are now in the hot pursuit for the position of senate president,” he said.
The Borno lawmaker lamented that integrity and competence are no longer considered because any well heeled lawmaker who could afford to buy their way easily becomes the senate president.
