The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) said the installation of new Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunications Network (AFTN) systems in 26 airports nationwide marks a significant milestone in its efforts to modernise Nigeria’s aeronautical communication infrastructure.
The director of air traffic services at the agency, Mr Tayo John, stated this in his speech at a sensitisation workshop on the newly installed AFTN systems held yesterday in Lagos.
“The new AFTN system, though operating on the X.25 protocol like the traditional AFTN, has been designed to utilise more robust global satellite facilities. This advancement provides improved reliability, wider coverage, and enhanced message transmission efficiency. importantly, it is tailored to serve aeronautical communication operations and will also function as a dependable alternative to the air traffic service message handling system (AMHS),” John said.
The director said the AFTN remains the backbone of aeronautical communication worldwide as it ensures timely and accurate meteorological information and dissemination, enhances safety of air navigation and ensures seamless communication between Nigeria and other States within the ICAO network “reinforcing our integration into the global aviation community.”
He further said while the air traffic service message handling system (AMHS) is the next generation system, AFTN remains a reliable fallback option because its availability guarantees continuity of operations in case of any AMHS disruption.
“With installations across 26 airports, Nigeria now boasts an extensive and resilient communication infrastructure to support aviation growth.
John said the workshop was meant to *familarise our technical and operational staff with the hands-on training, features and functionalities of the new AFTN systems, *strengthen capacity in managing and troubleshooting the system for optimal performance, *share knowledge and best practices to ensure effective utilization of the AFTN network, and *reiterate the strategic importance of aeronautical communication in supporting NAMA’s vision of safe, efficient, and cost-effective air navigation services.
“The modernisation of AFTN is another demonstration of NAMA’s commitment to safety, efficiency and technological advancement in Nigeria’s aviation sector. However, the true value of this infrastructure lies in how well we operate and maintain it,” he added.
He urged the participants “to approach this workshop with dedication, openness and a strong commitment to professionalism” so as to “build a communication system that stands as the pride of Africa and meets the highest global standards.”
