Ahead of the Osun State governorship rerun on Thursday, the Ekiti State governor-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday visited the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the election, Senator Iyiola Omisore, in Oduduwa Estate home, Ile-Ife.
The visit took place barely 48 hours after the senate president and presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Bukola Saraki paid Omisore a similar visit.
Although Fayemi told newsmen at the end of their meeting that his visit was not on political issues, but personal, it is believed that he had talked Omisore into supporting the APC candidate in the election, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola in the rerun.
It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Sunday declared the governorship election held in the state the previous day as inconclusive because the difference between the two leading parties, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), was lower than the number of the votes cancelled.
After the collation of all the results from the 30 council areas of the state, Adeleke of the PDP had 254,698 while the candidate of APC, Gboyega Oyetola, polled 254,345.
Omisore who left the PDP after a disagreement over the party’s primary for the election scored 128,049 votes. The candidate of the Action Democratic Party, Moshood Adeoti, scored 49,742, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Fatai Akinbade, scored 7,681 votes. Adeoti left the APC while Akinbade defected from the PDP to contest in the election.
The INEC said the rerun would take place in seven polling units located in Orolu, Osogbo, Ife North and Ife South council areas on Thursday, September 27.
Omisore is believed to be strong in the polling units in Ife North and Ife South.
“Don’t you know that I am Omisore’s in-law and I am free to visit him anytime I wish?
“Therefore my purpose of coming to Omisore is neither on political issue nor rerun election coming up on Thursday.
“But I came to visit him to show my concern and care for his welfare,” Fayemi told journalists.
